Surly Wombat

Things here move quickly, it doesn’t seem like 4 weeks, but it’s now only about a week till I board my plane back to the UK. It’s quite likely this is the last time I am here as a visitor. If all goes to plan, the next time I fly into Australia it will be for good.

It’s hard to put my thoughts on this into words. On one hand I have found the person I want to spend the rest of my life with, on the other, to be with that person I have to leave my family, my friends, my country. Thing is you see, I like the UK. I know it, I know where I am, I know which shops sell what, which political parties stand for what (and which that stand for nothing).

I won’t pretend there aren’t times I wish Maria lived round the corner rather than round the world, because I do. I won’t pretend there aren’t times I don’t wish that she could move to the UK, but for family reasons she cannot. Mostly those times are when I am alone, all it takes is her presence to remind me that the choice I have made is the right one. The only one I could make.

So in about a week I have to fly home, to start the next phase of my life - building a future for myself and my wife to be. It’s not going to be easy, and it’s a job that will hopefully last a lifetime.
